Saving a Good Old Horn


Mentor Craig Parmerlee plays an old double-belled euphonium.
It's okay, but it needs work to be at its best .


Repair expert Rick Oldham says he will return it to like-new condition. He'll show the Phillips Guild students how it looks at each step of restoration.

Here's how it all started...

This old horn looks okay, but...

The four valves are corroded. Three valves play the notes, one valve switches from the large bell (for a baritone horn sound) to the small bell (for a solo sound, somewhat like a trombone).

The small bell has nice engraving, but it's tarnished.

The big bell's gold finish is worn.

Will this old instrument regain its former glory? Watch and see...
