Under the leadership of Dr. Lee H. Jones, this group has been performing for more than a decade. With mostly one player per part, this group produces a musical clarity and precision that are missing from a larger group. The ensemble plays music that is unusual and musically rewarding, including some out-of-print material found by extensive research. This performing group often invites promising students to join in, including several side-by-side performances with Phillips Guild students and other outstanding student musicians.
Jazz Renegades Dance Band
The Jazz Renegades Dance Band is a 15-piece jazz band that performs in the tradition of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton and other great bands. Whether swinging or rocking, the band calls on the talents of some of the best jazz musicians in the area, playing saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and other jazz instruments. Along with these outstanding players, the Jazz Renegades regularly invites Phillips Guild students to join in on rehearsals and concerts, where they learn jazz music by playing it.
Phillips Guild student performing groups
Phillips Guild students perform in weekly rehearsals and for special events, learning to coordinate musically with other players and to maintain poise in front of audiences. Students have performed at the Indianapolis Artsgarden, the Indianapolis International Airport, Conseco Fieldhouse, Martin University and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Students at all levels of development perform, from young Explorers through Apprentices and Journeymen.
