In this session we will learn about:

How chords are formed and used in jazz
How to recognize the most common chords: Maj7, min7, and dom7
The ii - V – I progression

Scales to learn for this session: C, F, Bb, and G major

We encourage you to practice scales in all 12 keys. Please see the Scale Practice page for some fun practice aids.

Jam session tunes:

Look at the lead sheet for O Tannenbaum. Can you find the three places where we have a ii - V - I progression? (Hint: In the concert key of Bb, this sequence is Cm7 - F7 - Bb.)

Likewise, find the ii - V - I progressions in Let It Snow. That progression happens once in each of the “A” sections. It also happens once in the “B” (bridge) section. However, don’t be misled. The bridge is in a different key, so the ii - V - I is relative to the bridge key.
