Phillips Guild History
The late Robert "Bob" Phillips, a chemist by profession, was a gifted amateur musician,
conductor, music teacher and mentor. During his time in Indianapolis, he formed many
musical groups for the benefit of serious musicians, amateur and professional, including
concert bands, jazz groups and chamber ensembles of every type. He invited young
musicians into his home for lessons in music of all styles from concert to jazz to
pops.
Following his death in 1991, the ensembles thrived; however, the educational mission
went dormant.
In 1997, a group of Bob's former students formed the Phillips Music Guild in order
to give life to the educational activities that Bob so loved. The Guild invites talented
and committed young band students from Indianapolis Public Schools and other Central
Indiana schools to participate in regular sessions of ensemble playing and small
group instruction throughout the school year.
Through the Phillips Music Guild, professional and amateur musicians throughout the
community volunteer their time to work with the music students, giving them a unique
opportunity to hone music skills and gain important life experiences.
